Where to Recycle Bike Tubes

Alchemy Goods (Ag) recently announced a partnership with Trek and REI to collect and recycle bicycle tubes. They have recycled 400,000 tubes to date, and have set a goal of recycling 200,000 more by the end of 2013. Most tubes types are accepted, including ones with patches, which they note brings character to the final upcycled item, which is sewn together in the same Seattle neighborhood in which Ag is located. Even the valve stem is accepted for recycling, functioning as a zipper pull in its new life. Ag upcycles the tubes into messenger and shoulder bags, backpacks, toiletry bags and other items. Ask your local REI store or  Trek dealer if they are participating in the recycling program and bring your tubes to them for drop-off. Independent bike dealers and repair shops are also eligible to participate, so see if yours does.
