Where to Recycle Smoke Alarms

The National Fire Protection Association recommends that smoke alarms be replaced every ten ears. According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, smoke alarms can be put in the household trash, as the amount of mercury or other radioactive material they may contain is too small to have a negative impact on the environment. If you prefer to recycle it so that it doesn’t go into a landfill you can  bring it to the Wachusett Watershed Regional Recycling Center located at 131 Raymond Huntington Highway, in West Boylston, on Wednesdays from 2:30-4:30 or on the third Saturday of the month from 8am to noon. Some manufacturers will take their alarms back for proper recycling. New Hampshire’s Department of Environmental Services website lists the mailing addresses of many manufacturers. As the site indicates, you should contact the company before mailing in case they have any instructions you need to follow.
