Wachusett Region Recycling Events-5/5/12

Only a day or two left to donate perennial plants to the Wachusett Garden Club for its annual plant sale. Contact the club at 774-239-7151 or onlinewgc@yahoo.com if you’d like them to do the digging or to pick up your donation. Donations should be made by May 5, 2012.

If you’re headed east on Route 20 this Saturday, why not pack your #6 plastic, aka ‘Styrofoam,’  in the back of your car and drop it off to ReFoamIt’s collection event at the Northboro Department of Public Works. The event runs from 9am to 1pm and is free.

And not much time left to donate to the sixth annual Worcester: The City That Reads Give A Book Drive to provide summer reading books to kids wouldn’t normally have access to reading materials. Books are being collected at many locations through May 15, 2012. The drive is collecting new and gently-used books from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade readers. Book drives are being held at Worcester’s high schools, colleges, universities, private schools and many businesses. Additional drop-off locations are: all city branches of People’s United Bank, Commerce Bank, Millbury Savings, and Bay State Savings Bank; the Tatnuck Square branch of Bank of America; Worcester and Millbury Credit Unions; Stop & Shops on Lincoln, Grafton and West Boylston streets; Shaw’s Supermarkets on West Boylston Street and Webster Square; the Price Chopper on East Mountain Street; the Worcester Senior Center; the Worcester Public Library; Starbucks on West Boylston Street; Light Labs; the DCU Center; the Worcester Sharks; the Jewish Community Center; and the Greendale YMCA. If your business is interested in holding a drive, call (508) 853-3444.

Saturday, May 19th, 2012 is the day to bring your hazardous materials to the Wachusett Watershed Recycling Center at 131 Raymond Huntington Highway, West Boylston, MA. Residents of Boylston, Holden, Paxton, Princeton, Rutland, Sterling, and West Boylston can come to the center on Saturday from 8am to 11am for hazardous and bulk recycling. The center is also open Wednesday afternoons from 2:30-4:30 for bulk recycling (free & fee). Check their website for the extensive lists of items they take.

Holden’s Gale Free Library is looking for donations of new or gently-used LEGOs, DUPLOs and MEGA blocks for their children’s room. In addition, the Friends of the Gale Free Library in Holden, MA (23 Highland Street) is collecting books for this year’s used book sales. Gently-used adult and children’s books can be dropped off at the library during business hours. In addition to fiction books, they will accept books on all types of hobbies (cooking, sports, woodworking, antiques, computers, etc.). They are also looking for DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks. Each year, they start from scratch to stock up for their book sales, so your donations are meaningful. Any donations should be made during business hours, which are available on their website.

The Kelley Backpacks Program creates backpacks of urgently needed materials for children who are being placed in foster care. The kids sometimes have very little to take with them when they are removed from their homes.  The backpacks are given to the children after they get medical checkups at UMass Memorial Hospital prior to going into foster care. The program is looking for donations of new or “good-as-new” backpacks, pajamas, underwear, socks, hats, gloves or mittens and baby wipes, as well as stuffed animals, blankets, personal hygiene items, toys and games, books, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, diapers and formula are also welcome. For more information about the program or how to donate, email kelleybackpacks@gmail.com
