Wachusett Region Recycling Events-10/1/11

The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 10am – 2pm. This event provides a way for people to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs safely. The last 2 events collected 309 tons of pills nationwide. Local collection sites are Holden Police Department (1370 Main Street Holden Ma, 01520) and Rutland Police Department (242 Main Street Rutland Ma, 01543).

ReFoamIt will be collecting #6 plastic/Styrofoam at Grace Congregational Church in  Framingham, MA on October 22, 2011 from 10am to 3pm. The church is located at 76 Salem End Road. This event is open to the public. There is no cost for recycling but donations are accepted. Some examples of #6 plastics are packing peanuts, packing blocks, trays that hold meat or fruit, restaurant take-out containers, and white foam coffee cups. Halloween Costume Swap events will be held in various Massachusetts locations on Saturday, October 8, 2011. Check this link to find out more information and the locations: National Costume Swap Day.

There are two electronics recycling events on Saturday, October 1st, 2011. The first is in Paxton, MA at St. Columba’s Church, 10 Richards Avenue from 9am to 2pm. The other is at St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson, MA from 8am to 2pm. Many types of electronics will be accepted for a fee at both events. Residents from any town are welcome.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Game Day Challenge is a recycling competition for colleges. During the competition, colleges and universities implement and track the progress of a recycling program. Registration is open to schools with football teams. It’s goals are to reduce waste at football games, increase awareness of and participation in waste reduction. Participants are judged on five categories: waste reduction, greenhouse gas reduction, diversion rate, recycling, and organics reduction. Registration is open until September 30, 2011.

Jordan’s Furniture’s 17th annual Coats for Kids drive runs from October 15, 2011 to January 8, 2012. Gently-used Mens, Womens, Childrens, and Infants coats can be dropped off at any Jordan’s Furniture or Anton’s Cleaners location. Anton’s will clean the coats prior to donation. Anton’s will accept donations from collection drives held at schools, churches, and other community or corporate organizations. Coats should be in wearable condition without any rips or tears. Check out Anton’s and Jordan’s websites for their locations. School can participate in the Coats for Kids School Rewards Program, a competition for all local schools.

Gently-used children’s books can also be donated to the Sterling Fire Department for their literacy partnership with Reading Tree, a non-profit organization that supplies books to  disadvantaged kids in the region. The collection box is located in the rear of the fire department’s parking lot at 5 Main Street, Sterling, MA so donations can be made any time.

  1. The location, times and materials collected should be posted. I could only download the title of the event. However, Wachusett recycling rocks!
