Wachusett Region Recycling Events – 3/19/11


There are a couple of events happening this weekend, and one drive ending this weekend. Also listed below are upcoming events/drives in April and May.

Recycling in March 2011

Wachusett Regional High School’s DECA Chapter is collecting gently-used prom dresses for their annual ‘A Dress to Remember’ event. The dresses will be available to Wachusett students on March 19th, 2011 to try on for the upcoming prom season so donations should be given by March 18th. The Holden Fire Explorers bottle/can collection is running this Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the Holden Fire Annex (old fire headquarters) on Main Street, Holden, MA from 9 am to noon.

The Wachusett Earthday Recycling Center, 131 Raymond Huntington Highway, West Boylston, will be open from 2:30-4:30pm every Wednesday in March and from 8-11am on Saturday, March 19, 2011 from 8-11am. Check their website to find out what they collect and which items require a fee. The next hazardous waste collection will be on Saturday, April 19, 2011.

Non-perishable food items will be collected in lieu of fines at the Gale Free Library during the month of March 2011. Bring your food donations to the circulation desk. All donations will be given to the Wachusett Food Pantry.

Have a bunch of stuff that you can sell at a yard sale? While it’s still a little chilly and muddy, sign up to rent a table at the First Church in Sterling annual indoor yard sale fundraiser on Saturday, March 26, 2011 from 9 am to 1 pm. The church is located at 6 Meetinghouse Hill Road in Sterling, MA. Call the church office at 978-422-6657 to sign up.

Recycling in April 2011

Jordan’s Furniture is collecting gently-used baseball/softball equipment at any of their locations. The last day to make donations is April 1, 2011. They will accept gently-used metal bats, batter and catcher helmets, fielder and catcher gloves, chest protectors, shin guards, and metal/plastic cleats. They will also accept donations of the Boston Red Sox Foundation’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities program, with donated items going to needy kids.

Start saving your #6 polystyrene (Styrofoam-type materials with the recycling symbol 6 in the triangle with PS on it) for ReFoamIt‘s next recycling event – April 30, 2011 at Grace Church, Framingham, MA, from 10am to 3pm. The drop-off site is located at 76 Salem End Rd., Framingham, MA and anyone is able to participate. Materials that will be collected are: packing blocks (used to stabilize things like TV or computers in their boxes), packing peanuts, coffee cups that are pure polystyrene with no cardboard infused in it, meat trays and take-out containers, and even those large coolers that can be bought at grocery stores. They will also be collecting plastic forks, knives, and spoons, but keep these separate from the Styrofoam.

Also on Saturday, April 30, 2011, is the 2nd annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Last year, 242,000 pounds of drugs were turned in. Why bother to safely dispose of old prescription drugs? To keep kids from using or selling old drugs in they find in medicine cabinets and to keep the drugs out of our sewers and drinking water. Check the website for collection locations.

Holden, MA will be holding a Personal Document Shredding day on April 9, 2011. Bring any personal documents that need shredding to the Holden Senior Center from 8am to noon on that day.

Recycling in May 2011

The fifth annual Worcester: The City that Reads book drive hopes to collect 25,000 books that will be donated to schools and local organizations. Gently-used or new books will be collected through May 15, 2011. Keep an eye out for collection sites in the city of Worcester. The One-Shot Project is hoping to put together 20 DSLR camera and equipment setups before May 15, 2011. These camera packages will be brought to Iraq to so that children ages 10-17 living in below average conditions can be given an artistic-vocational opportunity. Your working point-and-shoot camera can be mailed to the address below. See their website for information on postage payment assistance.
