Wachusett Region Recycling Events – 11/13/10


Bring your old incandescent holiday lights, working or not, to any Home Depot for recycling and receive $3 off a set of energy-efficient LED lights. This promotion ends November 14, 2010.

Recycle your redeemable bottles and cans at Major Edwards Elementary School, 70 Crescent St., West Boylston, MA this Saturday, November 13th, 2010 from 10am to 1pm. This bottle and can drive is being held by West Boylston’s Boy Scout Troop 151.

The Massachusetts Children’s Fund is holding a baby food drive until November 19, 2010. They prefer to receive unopened unexpired plastic jars so that there is no risk of breaking glass jars while transporting the food. Drop off boxes are located in the lobby at the Spring Street  and Floral Elementary Schools, Sherwood Middle School (all in Shrewsbury, MA), the Shrewsbury Fire Department, and the First Congregational Church. Food will be donated to needy families. Contact them via email to find a more convenient drop off location or for more information about holding your own baby food drive.

Two winter coat drives are going on right now:

Jordan’s Furniture is holding its 16th annual Coats for Kids drive until January 8, 2011. Gently-used Mens, Womens, Childrens, and Infants coats can be dropped off at any Jordan’s Furniture or Anton’s Cleaners location. Anton’s will accept donations from collection drives held at schools, churches, and other  community or corporate organizations. Coats should be in wearable condition without any rips or tears. The  Coats for Kids‘ School Rewards™ program awards the three elementary and middle schools who collect the most coats a range of prizes, including school furnishings, supplies, pizza or sundae party, or cash. Another place you can donate a gently-used coat is the Burlington Coat Factory. Their 4th annual coat drives runs until January 17, 2011. Bring your coat to the customer service desk and receive 10% off your purchase. Local locations are at 344 Greenwood Street, Worcester, and 100 Boston Turnpike, Shrewbury, MA.

Starting in September 2010, the Wachusett Watershed Regional Recycling Center (WWRRC), 131 Raymond Huntington Highway, West Boylston, MA will be open from  3-5pm every Wednesday afternoon and from 8-11 am on the THIRD Saturday morning of each month. The next hazardous waste collection will be held on November 20, 2010 from 8am to 11am. Residents of Boylston, Holden, Paxton, Princeton, Rutland, Sterling, and West Boylston, MA are eligible to use the facility. Consult the WWRRC website for the list of items they accept and the related fees. Collections will not be held between November 24th and January 1st.

Sterling’s Friends of the Library group is looking for donations of gently-used children’s books for its ongoing book sale. Donations can be dropped off at the main desk of the Conant Public Library, 4 Meetinghouse Hill Road, Sterling, MA during business hours.

Non-perishable food items can be donated at the following places:

Unopened non-perishable items and personal care items, such as toothbrushes and soap, can be donated at Herlihy Insurance in the Rutland Plaza, 83 Main Street, Rutland, MA, 2nd floor) and Rutland Pharmacy, 18 Maple Avenue, Rutland, MA. The Rutland Girls Scouts are holding this drive throughout 2010.

There are collection boxes near the registers at the Big Y on Reservoir Street, Holden, MA and inside the Holden Senior Center, 1130 Main Street, Holden, MA, for packaged Wachusett Food Pantry donations.

Food donations can be brought to St. Patrick’s (290 Main Street, Rutland, MA) and the First Congregational Churches (264 Main Street, Rutland, MA) any time.

The West Boylston Community Food Pantry, 26 Central St., is looking for donations of paper products, like toilet paper and paper towels, as well as food items. The pantry is open every third Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m for donation dropoffs.

Paxton’s Emergency Management Team is looking for donations of items to used at an emergency shelter in the event of an disaster. Their budget did not allow for the purchase of these items. They are looking for children’s arts and craft items, coloring books and crayons in like-new condition, toiletries (unopened packages of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, small unopened bottles of shampoo, etc), canned fruit, packaged energy/power bars. They are looking for other items people are less likely to have on hand that are not listed here. Call the team at (508) 791-6600 to arrange a drop-off of donated items or find out what else they need.
