Wachusett Region Recycling Events-8/14/10


Paxton’s Emergency Management Team is looking for donations of items to used at an emergency shelter in the event of an disaster. Their budget did not allow for the purchase of these items. They are looking for children’s arts and craft items, coloring books and crayons in like-new condition, toiletries (unopened packages of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, small unopened bottles of shampoo, etc), canned fruit, packaged energy/power bars. They are looking for other items people are less likely to have on hand that are not listed here. Call the team at (508) 791-6600 to arrange a drop-off of donated items or find out what else they need.

Boy Scout Troop 151 redeemable can and bottle drives are held on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Major Edwards Elementary School, 70 Crescent St.

Wachusett Watershed Recycling will be open on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 3-6pm for a general collection (no hazardous materials). The recycling facility is located at 131 Raymond Huntington Highway, West Boylston, MA. Information about items that are accepted can found on the Boylston, Holden, Paxton, Princeton, Rutland, Sterling, and West Boylston town websites.

Recycle your #6 styrofoam at a collection event held by ReFoamIt and KWD Warehouse. The collection event will be held at Grace Congregational Church, 76 Salem End Road, Framingham, MA on Saturday, October 23, 2010 from 10am to 3pm. The Styrofoam/polystyrene packaging, food trays, or coffee cups must display the number 6 with PS below it and must be free of tape and food particles. The event is open to anyone and is free. They are also collecting plastic utensils and corded electronic equipment for recycling (there is a fee for electronics recycling).

Sterling’s annual townwide yard sale is being held on Saturday September 18, 2010 from 8am – 2pm. The cost is $20 to hold a sale in your yard, or $25 to have a spot on the town common. You’ll get publicity and be included on the yard sale map. Registration forms are available at the Conant Public Library (4 Meetinghouse Road, Sterling, MA) and Town Hall (Butterick Municipal Building, 1 Park Street). Donate hard cover and soft cover adult/children books to the Friends of the Gale Free Library (Holden, MA), the Friends of the Princeton Library or the Friends of Richards Memorial Library (Paxton, MA) for their 2010 annual books sales. Fiction and non-fiction books on any topic are welcome. They can be dropped off at the Gale Free Library, 23 Highland St (Route 31), Holden, MA during business hours, on the porch of Princeton’s Mechanics Hall (104 Main Street, Route 140, East Princeton, MA), or at Richards Memorial Library (44 Richards Ave, Paxton, MA) during business hours.

If you have non-perishable foods you’re not going to eat, why not donate them? Maybe you thought you’d try a new soup flavor but it doesn’t appeal to you now. Or you mistakenly bought crunchy, not smooth, peanut butter. Unopened perishable items and personal care items, such as toothbrushes and soap, can be donated at Herlihy Insurance in the Rutland Plaza, 83 Main Street, Rutland, MA, 2nd floor) and Rutland Pharmacy, 18 Maple Avenue, Rutland, MA. The Rutland Girls Scouts are holding this drive throughout 2010. There is also a collection box near the registers at the Big Y on Reservoir Street, Holden, MA for packaged Wachusett Food Pantry donations. Food donations can be dropped off at St. Patrick’s (290 Main Street, Rutland, MA) and the First Congregational Churches (264 Main Street, Rutland, MA) any time.
