Where to Recycle Yoga Mats

Although yoga is a back-to-basics activity, the yoga mats many people use are not natural. Many yoga mats are made of PVC plastic, which won’t break down naturally but can be recycled. Rather than sending your mat to the landfill, send it to Recycle Your Mat, 4777 Larkwood Street, Eugene, OR 97405 for recycling and receive a coupon for 20% off an order at Manduka.com.

You can also drop off your yoga mat for reuse at a local yoga studio. Exhale (28 Arlington St., Boston, MA 02116 www.exhalespa.com) and  Laughing Dog Yoga (12 Front Street, Natick, MA 01760 ldy.otpartners.com) are collecting used mats for reuse/recycling.

Many organizations across the country are also looking for usable yoga mats for their programs. Check out the growing list of organizations in need of donations at The Boulder Mat Company’s site. Current listings include “A Thousand Joys” program for middle school youth learning coping skills in Watts, California, the New Orleans Women’s Shelter, and Lehigh Valleys’ “Shanti” project working with youth in detention centers.
