Where to Recycle Shoes

Both gently worn and really worn shoes can be reused or recycled. Gently-worn men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes (sneakers, boots, sandals, dress shoes) can be donated to the needy through clothing collection boxes. Women’s and children’s shoes are accepted for for sale in some consignment shops, like Pass It On, MT Pockets, or Cutie Patuties. Gently-worn shoes or boots  of any kind can be donated to  Soles4Souls so they can be given to the needy in other countries. Check their website for drop off locations in Massachusetts or mailing information.

Any brand of worn-out athletic shoes can be sent to Nike to be recycled into sports court material. Mail individual pairs of shoes to:

Nike Recycling Center
c/o Reuse-A-Shoe
26755 SW 95th Ave.
Wilsonville, OR 97070
Attn: Shred

or drop them off a local Nike store such as the one at the Wrentham Outlet mall.

Crocs brand shoes can be mailed back to the manufacturer for recycling. Mail to Crocs Recycling West, 3375 Enterprise Avenue, Bloomington, CA 92316

Flip flops are incredibly popular these days and they wear out fast. There is a place a long way from here that will take your flip flops and turn them into bead materials that are used for craft materials. UniquEco in Nairobi, Kenya works to turn flip flops into usable materials to reduce the amount of garbage on their shores. Flip flops can be sent to them at: UniqueEco, P.O. Box 15565-00503, Nairobi, Kenya.

In the US, flip flops can be collected and recycled through TerraCycle’s Flip Flip Brigade. Collect 10 pairs, mail them to TerraCycle for free (by downloading the prepaid mailer from their site), and receive a pair of Old Navy brand flip flops plus additional Old Navy coupons. Okabashi brand will take back their branded sandals for recycling. Mail them to ATTN: Recycling Program, Okabashi Brands, Inc., 4823 Roy Carlson Blvd., Buford, GA 30518. Their shoes are made with #3 plastic, so they are recyclable where ever #3 plastics are accepted.
