Where to Recycle Eyeglasses

I’ve always hung onto at least one pair of my old eyeglasses, thinking I might need an emergency set or might reuse the frames. Because they are so expensive, I hate to throw them out. But I’ve found places that will bring my old eyeglasses to people that don’t have access to eye health services.

Used adult/child prescription and non-prescription glasses or sunglasses (plastic and metal frames are accepted) can be donated to the Lion’s Club by mailing to: Lions Clubs International, Attention: Receiving Department, 300 W. 22nd Street, Oak Brook, IL  60523. Eyeglasses can be put in Lion’s Club drop-off boxes for collection. Locally, a drop-off box that is shaped like a postal mail box and painted in the Lion’s Club colors of yellow & blue is near the entrance to the Big Y Supermarket, Reservoir Street, Holden, MA.

Eye glass frames can also be dropped off at Wachusett Recycled Resource Center, 52 Boyden Road, Holden, MA during business hours for use in craft projects.

Eyeglasses can be sent to New Eyes for the Needy so they can be passed along to those in need in developing countries. They can be mailed in a padded envelope to New Eyes for the Needy, 549 Millburn Avenue, PO Box 332, Short Hills, NJ 07078. Donations may be tax deductible – provide your name and address with your donation so you can receive a receipt and check with your tax adviser.

Drop off your gently used prescription, nonprescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, bifocals at Lenscrafters. They will be delivered to those in need worldwide. Lenscrafters has locations in the Greendale Mall, Auburn Mall, and Solomon Pond Mall.

New reading or distance glasses and non-prescription sunglasses can be sent to Unite for Sight, a charity organization that supports eye clinics around the world so that barriers to care can be eliminated.  Contact Laura Reynolds (lreynolds@uniteforsight.org) via email to find out where to send your glasses. Companies can also donate all types of ophthalmic equipment and materials in good or excellent working condition for use in the clinics
